Tulsi Ghimire is one of the most successful and influential filmmakers in the history of Nepali cinema, often credited with ushering in a "golden age" of storytelling. Born in Kalimpong, India, he moved to Mumbai to work in Bollywood as an editor before transitioning to Nepal, where he made his directorial debut with the 1981 hit Bansuri. Ghimire is best known for directing a string of legendary blockbusters including Kusume Rumal, Lahure, Chino, and Darpan Chhaya— which blended emotional family dramas with memorable music and high production values. He is also recognized for discovering and mentoring some of the industry’s biggest stars, such as Bhuwan KC and Saroj Khanal. Beyond directing, he is a talented editor, screenwriter, and actor, often making memorable cameos in his own films. He remains a revered figure in the industry, continuing to work on new projects while his classic films remain cultural benchmarks for Nepali audiences worldwide.
